Back to pencils. I think there is nothing that brings life to a face like the pencil's sign. Over and over again, when I ink my pencils, faces become stiff, less genuine. The softness of a smile is lost, sometimes the resemblance to the original subject vanishes. And it's not just because I make subtle changes/mistakes while inking. The faces I draw directly in pen- ink, although quite spontaneous, still lack that dynamic spark that pencils have. This is particularly true when working on small drawings like these. What's your experience?

Have a great afternoon!
hello,
ReplyDeleteinteresting to hear your thoughts about pencil and ink. I think you are right, there is something warmer and often softer about pencil. These are each lovely, quite inviting.
Thank you dear!Maybe I should try and skip the inking at all....
DeleteLove the wind-blown hair. I've never though about the pencil vs ink drawing. I inked mine in after I drew them at first, but now I don't. Maybe I realized the same thing you did and just didn't know it.
ReplyDeleteThanks!I should do the same and see what happens...
DeleteI like the most pen and charcoal. They suit to my hand.
ReplyDeleteThese Your drawings are very beautiful and I can see how girls in them are alive, they think, they look at something... All are really wonderful, no 12 is my favorite.
Thank you! I guess I still don't know what suits my hand most...so it's good to explore!
DeleteYou know, #12 is my favorite too!
Lovely girsl. I think perhaps, it does have a lot to do with what feels good in your hand -- pencil, pen, charcoal, pastels. They all have a "feel" and some just seem better than others.
ReplyDeleteI agree. Pencils really feel the best in my hands. My issue is that I love colors. So, ultimately, to color these drawings, I would have to ink them of pass over them again with a pencil, I think. It's this last step that I should learn to do better. I loose some "spark of life" every time I go over my originals with multiliners. It would be nice if I could draw directly in inks, but I cannot bring myself to do so, especially when working on a very complex and big drawing....
DeleteI'm a pen person through and through, and I really have to work to get my pencil people not stiff. I guess it's what you're used to... These are lovely faces, and pencil seems the perfect medium for them.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, dear. Most definitely pencils is my favorite tool for drawing. Using markers, though I feel I have to ink all my drawings in order to color them. That's when my problems begin...;)
